That’s What Friends Are For from The Jungle Book
[I would like to thank all my fabulous friends who answered my random questions in a mostly prompt fashion, you may not see how you contributed to this post but I assure you…you all did]
According to Dictionary.com the definition for friendship is “the state of being one’s friend” or “a friendly relation or intamacy” or “friendly feeling or disposition”. Urban Dictionary users define friendship as “a relationship between two individuals that share a mutual bond of trust and liking as well as commitment and personal feelings and experiences which allows them to benefit from each other”. Wikipedia says that friendship is “a term used to denote co-operative and supportive behavior between two or more people” and that certain values tend to be important in friendships. These values include sympathy and empathy, honesty, mutual understanding, and sincerely wanting what is best for each other.
I think friendship is accepting someone for who they are, without judging them, but also knowing when to step in and help out. Friendship is knowing what to say, what not to say, when to talk, and when to stfu and listen. Friendship is being unafraid of voicing what is on your mind and truly in your heart. Friendship is seeing the best in someone. True friendship is unconditional, just like true love…because friendship is love. And if friendship is love, then “[friendship] is patient, [friendship] is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-5)
When someone is a true friend they know without having to ask if something is private and not to be shared. When someone is a true friend you can eat Taco Bell in the car at 1 in the morning and end up talking for hours without realizing how much time has passed. When someone is a true friend you don’t let differences in opinion or beliefs stand between you. When someone is a true friend there is no such thing as an uncomfortable silence. Apologies come easily, from both sides of the argument, and in some cases they aren’t even necessary. You just know. When someone is a true friend you stay up until 3am to call your friend in a different time zone at midnight on their birthday. True friends tolerate your bizzare taste in music. True friends can drive together for 9 hours and then be sad to get out of the car. True friends care more about you than they do about themselves. True friends respond promptly to random text message requests at odd hours of the night. True friends can go without seeing each other for ages and then hang out like no time has passed. True friends know that sometimes the best gift is a good hug. True friends have a true desire and need to help you. True friends just are.
